    Introduction of Friability Test Apparatus

Friability tester is used to test the physical properties of non-coated tablets in mechanical stability, abrasion resistance collision resistance and so on in the process of production, packaging and storage. It can also test the friable condition of tablet coating and capsules.

    Features of Friability Test Apparatus

    • Independent test unit: Single-channel, single-cylinder independent operation mode with automatic timed shutdown.
    • High-quality observation design: The cylinder is made of highly transparent plexiglass, allowing for clear observation of the entire test process.
    • Intelligent control system: The number of rotations can be freely set, with precise control of speed and rotation parameters.
    • User-friendly interface: The LCD display clearly displays data, making operation simple and intuitive.
    • Comprehensive self-test function: Equipped with automatic detection and diagnosis capabilities, and automatic alarms for abnormal conditions.

    Keep Routine Tests Consistent

For a routine speed check, use a calibrated tachometer suitable for the rotating drum. Measure the actual speed under the defined check condition, compare it with the specified limit, and document the result. If the reading is outside tolerance, remove the instrument from service and contact authorized service personnel. Adjustment and calibration intervals should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your site SOP.

For cleaning, switch off and disconnect the instrument, remove the drum, and clear tablet dust using a soft lint-free cloth or other approved method. Avoid abrasive tools and unapproved solvents that may scratch or cloud the transparent drum. Reinstall only after all parts are clean and dry.

How a Typical Tablet Friability Test Works

Prepare the sample — Use whole tablets and carefully remove loose dust before weighing.

Record the initial mass — Accurately weigh the prepared sample and record the initial mass (W₁).

Load the drum — Place the tablets in the clean, dry drum and secure the removable side.

Run the test — A common compendial condition is 100 rotations at 25 ± 1 rpm, unless the applicable method specifies otherwise.

Inspect and reweigh — Remove the sample, dedust as before, check for cracked or broken tablets, and record the final mass (W₂).

Calculate and document — Calculate percentage mass loss and record the result, observations, equipment ID, and test conditions. How a Typical Tablet Friability Test Works

    FAQ

    1. How do I verify or calibrate the rotational speed?

Use a calibrated tachometer suitable for the rotating drum and measure the actual speed under the check condition defined in your SOP. Compare the reading with the instrument specification—25 ± 1 rpm is listed for the SED-CSD1-B—and document the result, reference standard, equipment ID, and date. If the reading is outside tolerance, stop using the tester and contact authorized service personnel. Do not adjust internal settings unless the manufacturer’s instructions and your quality system authorize it.

    2. How many tablets should be used for a friability test?

Follow the applicable pharmacopoeia, product monograph, validated method, and site SOP. A commonly published harmonized procedure uses whole tablets totaling as close as possible to 6.5 g when the unit mass is 650 mg or less. For tablets above 650 mg, 10 whole tablets are commonly used. Carefully dedust the sample before the initial weighing. Product-specific requirements always take precedence.

    3. What friability result is considered acceptable?

For many compressed, uncoated tablet products, a mass loss of not more than 1.0% is a common general reference. This is not a universal limit: the approved product specification or validated method may define a different criterion. Clearly cracked, cleaved, or broken tablets after tumbling should also be evaluated according to the applicable procedure rather than relying only on the calculated percentage.

    4. How should the drum be cleaned between tests?

Switch off and disconnect the instrument before cleaning. Remove the drum, clear loose tablet dust, and clean it using a soft lint-free cloth and a cleaning method approved by your site. Avoid abrasive tools and unapproved solvents that may scratch or cloud the transparent drum. Make sure the drum is completely clean and dry before reassembly and the next sample. Follow the manufacturer’s manual for any disassembly restrictions.

    5. Does the SED-CSD1-B meet USP or European Pharmacopoeia requirements?

The published speed of 25 ± 1 rpm and the listed drum dimensions align with commonly published harmonized conditions for tablet friability. Final suitability cannot be established from web specifications alone. Before purchase, confirm the current applicable chapter, the manufacturer’s compliance statement, dimensional and performance records, calibration documentation, and any IQ/OQ support required by your quality system.
